Hydraulics of vertical slot fishways

By Editor

Although vertical slot fishways can be designed to pass a wide variety of fish species over a significant flow range, they are less passable for fish that tend to follow or cling to walls or jump over weirs. The pools of a vertical slot fishway are hydraulically complex and do not supply resting areas as tranquil as a pool and weir/orifice ladder.

Conversion of Vertical Slot Fishways to Deep Slot … Deep slot fishways (DSF) are similar to vertical slot fishways (VSF) except that a sill has been placed at the base of the slot, and thus require a lower discharge to operate. Abstract Fishway hydraulics, however, have been intensively studied only starting since the 1980's. Fishways have been classified into three main categories according to their hydraulic characteristics: pool-and-weir, vertical slot, and Denil fishways. Fishways are hydraulically complex structures, and thus... Fish ladder - Wikipedia

Vertical slot fishways (VSF) are facilities to enable fish to migrate beyond (man built) obstructions such as dams or hydropower plants. VSF are rectangular channels separated into a sequence of pools by vertical walls. Vertical slots in these walls provide a migration corridor (Clay 1961; Rajaratnam et al. 1986). The sequence of
